PB is Alex McKee, an amateur model.

History:

cw: homophobia, mention of HIV/AIDS, mention of drug abuse, mention of drunk driving, death.

Born in Marseille, France in 1976, to a wealthy family, Mordecai was the only son of a French diplomat and his Greek wife. As a young child, he always knew there was something different about him and imagined himself to have a glorious destiny. This would prove to be true, because his realization of being gay and coming out to his rather conservative parents during the early 90s, when the public in France was becoming more aware of the AIDS pandemic, would start a chain of events that would lead to his death at the young age of 25.

By age 16, Mordecai was well aware of his attraction to the same sex. It wasn't spoken of much in the political circles his parents ran in, but knowing that it was a part of himself that he would never be able to change, Kai made the decision to come out. As he expected, his parents reacted with shock and disgust. They were unwilling to accept him, and Kai ran away from home, to live on the streets of Marseille for a year. He began to engage in more and more risky behavior. Drugs, sex with strange men, and the like became his lifestyle.

Of course, this was the exact kind of behavior his parents feared, and though Kai was lucky enough to never contract HIV, it became clear to his parents that in order to keep him safe, they would have to accept him for who he was. They reopened their arms to their only son, insisting he return home and apologized for how he'd been treated. From that point on, Kai was able to develop a much healthier relationship with his mother and father, both of whom became active supporters of the LGBTQ movement in France.

Eventually, Kai regained control of his life and began attending classes at Aix-Marseille University, where he studied Ancient Greek, and the Greek Classics. Having already known how to speak modern Greek, thanks to his mother, Kai found he excelled and was fascinated by the relationship of Achilles and Patroclus in Homer's Illiad. It was not long after that he met the love of his life.

Dominique was a Corsican student, two years older than Kai. They met in one of the many research libraries on campus, in the Classics section. Kai immediately felt an instant connection to his upperclassman. Though Kai was studying the Greeks, and Dominique was studying Latin and the Roman Empire under the Emperor Hadrian, their interests within those fields were close enough for them to begin long conversations that would evolve into late night study sessions, and then dates out around the city. When they became lovers, Kai would refer to Dom as his "Patroclus," while Dom called Kai his "Antonius."

In Kai's third year and Dom's fourth and final year at the university, they began discussing living together and possibly exchanging vows. While same-sex marriage had not yet been legalized in France (and wouldn't be until 2013), they knew they wanted to be with no one else and were willing to at least get married as a statement to each other, even if it would not be formally recognized. Dominique, being quite the romantic, decided he wanted to get Kai's permission first, before presenting the ring for Kai that he had purchased. They made plans with Kai's family to meet for dinner on a fateful night in November 2001.

Tragedy, though, would prevent the two from ever reaching their destination. En route to the restaurant where they were to meet Kai's family, their cab was t-boned by a drunk truck driver, completely crushing in Kai's side of the car. He died instantly. Dominique, however, survived, but on the way to the hospital, fell into a coma.

When Kai's parents heard the news, they rushed to the hospital. Kai had previously told him that Dom's family had cast him out for being gay, and knowing this, Kai's mother and father refused to leave Dom's bedside, knowing both that he was the man their only child loved, and that Dom was their only link to their son. With the help of his political status, Kai's father was able to obtain the power of attorney over Dom, ensuring that as long as Dom showed signs of brain activity, he would not be removed from life support.

Meanwhile, Kai was never really far away. Upon death, his spirit had lingered, unable to his beloved Patroclus' side. When he saw how his parents grieved over him and Dom, he could not find it in himself to pass on. He remained at Dom's bedside, speaking to him silently every day for two years. Of course, he never received a response, but it didn't matter to him. He had decided he'd never leave Dominique.

That was his intention, anyway. Two years pass, and eventually, the spector of Death, la grande faucheuse (grim reaper), had come for Dom's soul. By this time, Dom was considered as much of a son by Kai's parents, as Kai. And Kai, refusing to let Death take Dom because he knew how much Dominique meant to his parents, decided he'd strike a deal. In exchange for Dom's soul, he would offer his own. To his surprise, Death agreed.

The next thing Mordecai knew, he was standing under L'Arc de Triomphe on the Champs D'Élysée in Paris, and in his hands was a large black scythe which had a wicked edge. Icy knowledge slipped into his brain, telling him what he had already guessed. He had a new, deadly job.

Back in Marseille, Dominique slowly woke up to the tearful, yet joyful smiles of Kai's parents. Over the next year, Dominique would change his last name, with permission from Kai's parents, to Bellemort. In memory of his fallen Antonius.

That was in 2004. It is now 2022, and Kai has been roaming the country, performing his new job alone, but safe in the knowledge that his beloved Patroclus was well cared for. In his new job as a reaper of souls, his purvey has become the souls of deceased members of the LGBT community, always offering comfort to those who had felt forgotten, mistreated, or preyed upon as he escorted their souls to the afterlife.

Personality:
Empathetic:

Knowing well how it is to feel displaced, disowned, or disconnected, Mordecai as a reaper of souls has developed an intense empathy for the souls of the downtrodden. He has always tried to provide comfort to those who needed it, even before his death, and that has continued in his new unlife. This is exemplified in how he treats the souls of those who have committed suicide, were murdered, or died in some other tragic manner. He speaks words of comfort to them, and feels that as part of his job, he needs to be the one to offer them peace of mind that they are going somewhere better. Kai also has a soft spot for abandoned cats.

Vengeful:

In his role as a reaper of souls, Kai knows that it is not his place to pass judgement. That is for those who are beyond. That doesn't mean he doesn't avoid exacting a bit of vengeance now and then. Especially against those who might prey upon the weak. Though he's technically not supposed to, Kai will go out of the way to ensure that the souls of the cruel and unkind suffer during their last moments. He takes pleasure in ripping their souls from their bodies, using fear and power to ensure they know that their lives were unimportant, miniscule, and pathetic before dragging them to those beyond for their final judgement. For those who are still living, if he has the opportunity, Mordecai will occasionally torment them by filling their dreams with horror.

Hedonistic:

Since becoming a reaper, and knowing that things like mortal drugs, alcohol, and such cannot harm him, Mordecai has taken up some of the risky behavior he'd had after running away from his family when he was 16. For him, it has become a way to reconnect with his former humanity, and need to feel again. Though he has tried all sorts of things to get back those sensations, they do not have the impact on him as they would have on a normal human. As a result, Kai seeks higher highs and harder pain on a regular basis. Rarely, he'll find something that will affect him for a few hours, but since his body is immortal, he always recovers with no lingering issues.

Pessimistic:

Even when Mordecai was young, he'd developed a rather pessimistic view of the world. Seeing how his parents have had to maneuver through politics, and the effect of their initial disapproval of his orientation, Kai has a dark outlook at humanity. This has only increased upon becoming a reaper, as he travels the country and sees more and more of humanity's cruelty. This exhibits itself in Kai's frequent use of sarcasm and bitter tone.

Powers and Abilities:

As a psychopomp, or form of the grim reaper, Mordecai has all the abilities typical of such a creature. The primary of these is his ability to separate a human soul from its physical body. To do this, he must use his scythe. He is able to summon it at need as an extension of himself. And when he is not using it, it essentially ceases to exist. (For game purposes, Kai will only be limited to summon his scythe 5 times a day for a period of 20 minutes, and his ability to seperate souls will no longer be possible.)

Other abilities include:

🞬scythe weilding: knowledge of how to wield a scythe in battle.
🞬fear aura: if he desires, Kai can generate an intense aura that causes terror and fear in anyone within 10ft around him.
🞬invisibility: being a psychopomp, he's not usually seen by living people unless he chooses to be seen. this would translate to the ability to appear and disappear at will.
🞬immortality: being death personified, Kai cannot die. only the LA GRANDE MORT, aka the death of universes, can truly kill him. he can, however, be harmed. physical attacks can cause damage, though most injuries will heal in about 2-5 hours. major injuries would take upwards of 24hrs to heal.
🞬dream walking: death and dreams have always been bosom buddies. thus, Mordecai can enter people's dreams and direct the way those dreams go. he can also use dreams to communicate (an opt-out post will be used for those who don't want to participate in dreamwalking).
🞬death sight: he is able to see ghosts/spirits/etc, and communicate with them.
🞬umbrakinesis: Mordecai has the ability to manipulate shadows at will. his primary use for this skill is for travel, where he will disappear in one shadow and then reappear in another shadow somewhere else. the further the distance he travels, though, the more fatigued he gets, requiring rest before taking another "jump."
🞬multi-lingual: being a child of French/Greek parentage, Mordecai speaks and write fluent French and fluent (modern) Greek. his university education has also given him knowledge of Ancient Greek, and little bit of Latin (which he learned from Dominique). he can also speak decent English, as it was taught during his primary school years.
